Recent surveys of public trust in the news media have produced sobering results. In one Gallup poll, two-thirds of respondents rated their trust level as “none at all” or “not very much.” In another, half of the respondents said news outlets “intend to mislead, misinform or persuade the public.” This erosion of trust is a problem for the news business that has only grown in recent years. Traditionally underrepresented groups, including the LGBTQ+ community, also have a complicated and, at times, contentious relationship with the press that fuels this distrust. How can newsrooms counteract this trend? And what are the consequences if we don’t?
