Let’s break down the 400+ laws and policies being proposed and passed around the country that target LGBTQ+ communities, especially trans and gender-expansive people. We’ll also look at the policies and positions of key presidential candidates. This primer will help reporters, editors, and newsroom leaders get up-to-speed on what’s happening on the legislative and political front. When and how does a piece of proposed legislation become relevant enough to cover? How do coverage best practices for executive orders or emergency rules, like those in Texas and Missouri, differ from standard legislation? What stories will come out of these bills, if they’re passed? And how can reporters connect to a community that has ample reason to be cautious about speaking to journalists who are trying to cover this legislation?
