2023 NLGJA National Convention

Bisexual people make up the largest part of the LGBTQ+ community, but despite its sizable numbers, this diverse group is often rendered invisible in mainstream media coverage of queer life. When bisexuality is addressed in films, television shows, and news media, these depictions often rely on tired tropes and harmful myths about who bi people are, creating further stigma and misinformation. This panel will address those age-old stereotypes and provide greater understanding of the community through thoughtful discussion, probing insights, and personal reflections based upon the panelists’ lived experiences. In addition to providing appropriate terminology, this session will answer: Why does such a large community face such widespread erasure? How can authentic and accurate coverage of bi people address this problem? And what can we do in our newsrooms and everyday lives to be better advocates and allies to the bisexual community? By the end of this discussion, we hope to leave listeners inspired, challenged, and ready to have better conversations about an oft-misunderstood community.
