The rise of robots, chatbots and numerous forms of artificial intelligence is transforming industries — and it has now advanced enough to set off alarms in newsrooms and classrooms alike with the evolution of so-called “automated journalism. With the advent of sites like ChatGPT, generative AI content has already crept into beats including sports, business and real estate and has the potential to encroach into how journalists report and edit breaking news, entertainment, lifestyle features and more. This session will examine the practical, ethical and creative implications of AI-generated news “coverage” and will address concerns about disseminating potential misinformation created by AI.  It will include real-time demonstrations of what CAN be done with AI sites — that is, what can be “written” in seconds, on a hypothetical breaking-news deadline — that will also question whether they actually SHOULD be done. Sure, we’re fascinated by it — but should we be frightened instead?
